Jelenleg négyféle FAT (File Allocation tábla) létezik.

1: FAT12 már idejétmúlt, csak floppy lemezeken és 16Mb-nál
kisebb partíciókon használatos

2: FAT16 a következo lépés. Kizárólag 32Mb-nál kisebb és 16Mb-nál
nagyobb partíciók esetén használható.

3: A BIGDOS is 16-bites típusú, de nagyobb méretü partícióknál is
alkalmazható.
A DOS és a Win9x/ME használja manapság ezt a típust (OS/2-t,
WinNT/2000/XP-t és Linuxot is lehet FAT-ra telepíteni, de nem
érdemes). A maximális partícióméret 2Gb DOS és Win/9x/ME
esetén, 4Gb WinNT/2000/XP esetén.

4: FAT32 a legújabb, a Win95 OEM Service Release 2-ben jelent
meg eloször. A partícióméret jóval nagyobb lehet:

- Windows 2000: 32Gb-os partíciót tud formázni, de nagyobbat
is képes kezelni és konvertálni

- Windows Me: maximum 2^28 - 12 cluster

- Windows 95/98: maximum 4,177,918 cluster

Ezt a típust a Win9x/ME/2000/XP használja, a WinNT 4.0 nem ismeri.

A Win95 OSR2 megjelenésével újabb partíció típusokat vezettek be
annak jelzésére, hogy az adott partíció a 8Gb-os határ mögé
nyúlik. Ezek a típusok:
- BIGDOSx (0eh)
- kiterjesztett x (0fh)
- FAT32x (0ch)
Ezeket a típusokat a WinNT 4.0 nem ismeri fel!
